2 -Linocut Projects

Graphic Art
Project Overview
Linocutting involves carving a design into a piece of linoleum, applying ink to it and printing it on paper or textiles. My linocuttings have been featured in 3 linocut exhibitions in my hometown throughout the years 2021-2023. These are the only projects I have done as a school assignment.
Section 1- 2023
1. Nu Mai Priviti Prin Ochii Mortilor
This linocut is named "Nu Mai Priviti Prin Ochii Mortilor", translated it means "Stop looking through the eyes of the dead" and it is a quote from my favorite poet of all time, Walt Whitman. It encourages the viewer to think for theirself and form their own opinions and views of the world, not just taking every piece of information in. I have expressed this by having a nude woman, symbolizing vulnerability, while covering her eyes so she cannot see.

This is the process of me transfering the sketch on the linoleum, carving, placing the ink and printing the piece on paper, then on material.
2. To Be Beaten Black and Blue
This linocut is named "To be beaten black and blue". The title refers to the idiom meaning to be beaten really badly. This piece shows the consequences of being "beaten black and blue" if you dare to think outside of the box and not follow the crowd. The two heads are overlapping in the frontal lobe of the brain, where decision-making takes place. Also the colors used enhance the title, misdirecting it's meaning for being something shallow by just describing the colors, when in reality it means something deep.

This is me placing the sketch and the actual linoleum on the paper to make some markings and me sitting on the transfering paper because I needed to apply a lot of pressure.
3. Transcendentalism
This linocut is named "Transcendentalism" which is a current that is based on the philosophical idea that we cannot experience the Universe in its entire complexity because we are limited to only our 5 senses. It urges people to connect to nature and to their higher selves through spirituality and the subconscious mind. This piece represent the hand literally not perceiving the fish around it because it is limited. The hole resembles the lack of connection to the self.

4. Spiritual Awakening
This linocut is named "Spiritual Awakening". In Norse Mythology the snake was seen as a symbol of rebirth because it sheds its skin. This enforces the motif of the piece, spiritual awakening being the revival of the individual. It pays homage to "The Creation of Adam" but though a spiritual experience.

5. Emotional Burnout
This linocut is named "Emotional Burnout". It is a visual representation of depression and what it feels like being your own saboteur, it being through emotional or physical self harm.

This was my first multiple color linocut done with the same linoleum. I had to do 3 layers of ink yellow - blue - black and carve the exes in between them. This is the linoleum after the last carving step.
